Do I need my own kit to play ice hockey?Unfortunately - yes. We are only a recreational club and don't currently have much spare kit. We might be able to lend you bits and bobs though. Remember two things - 1. Ice is solid and it can hurt if you fall and 2. Unless you are wearing the required level of kit you will not be permitted to go on the ice. Back to TopWhy do I need my own kit?As per SRIHC rules - everyone has to be insured and the insurance company will not pay out for injuries where all the rules have not been followed including the wearing of proper protective equipment. Back to TopWhere can I buy kit?Your best plan is to shop around. There are a small number of local shops (within 30 miles) and online stores on the web. Most ice rinks have shops on site including the Murrayfield Ice Rink during daytime hours. On the links page are some of the more popular shops. Some are in the US, but they'll deliver to the UK. Another tip is to try before you buy, even if that means asking someone to try their gear on, as it is difficult to assess the right size from catalogues. Come along to a training session and get some practical information from our team members. Back to TopWhat kit do I need to have? For training as well as playing, ice hockey - the following kit is mandatory: helmet*, leg guards, upper body armour, ice hockey shorts, elbow guards, hockey gloves, hockey skates, as well as an ice hockey stick. *It is recommended that all players wear a full face mask or a visor. Players born after December 31, 1974 MUST wear, as a minimum, a visor. Players 18 years and younger as well as ladies MUST wear a full face mask. For more details please consult current SRIHC rules. Back to TopI am new to ice hockey, I can't even skate. What should I do?There are public skating sessions throughout the week. This can help you to familiarise yourself with skating. You can borrow skates from the rink, although it is strongly recommended that you purchase your own ice hockey skates. Back to TopDo you play full contact ice hockey? No. In Scottish recreational ice hockey, full contact body checking is not allowed. Back to TopWhy are practice times so late?Murrayfield Ice Rink has huge demand. This means the ice rinks noramlly prioritises its schedule. Most recreational teams play very late at night. We are no different. Back to TopAre there any age restrictions?Yes - to train at recreational ice hockey you must be at least 16 years old. You are further restricted by not being allowed to play a game until you are 18 years old. In addition, extra kit is needed for younger players. These rules are enforced for insurance purposes and full details are available from SRIHC. Back to TopCan ladies play recreational ice hockey?Of course. Recreational ice hockey is a non-league sport open to all, with no restrictions to gender or race. Full details of the rules regarding the policy and procedures regarding Scottish recreational ice hockey can be found on the SRIHC website. Back to TopDo you play in a league?Scottish recreational ice hockey teams are not permitted to form a league.
